Arsenal's German defender Per Mertesacker Mertesacker: joined the Gunners during the summer.

Gunners lose Mertesacker

Arsenal are set to be without German defender Per Mertesacker for the foreseeable future.

The 27-year-old was carried off with a knee injury during last weekend’s victory at Sunderland.

Boss Arsene Wenger’s told the club’s official website: "He has had surgery and we have lost him for a while; how long I don't know.

"He had reconstruction of his ligaments, so it will be long-term."

This news comes as a further blow to the Gunners, who are already sweating on the fitness of Laurent Koscielny.

They are out to bounce back from their FA Cup exit on Saturday when they host Tottenham on Sunday.

Blue Square, Boylesports and Paddy Power make Wenger’s men 7/5 to taste success while Spurs are 2/1 with Victor Chandler.
