Swindon moved to the top of the table for the first time since the opening weekend of the season on Tuesday with their eighth straight victory.

The Robins came from behind to see off fellow promotion hopefuls Shrewsbury 2-1 at the County Ground to go a point clear.

The Shrews – 19/5 with Victor Chandler – took the lead through Matt Richards five minutes before the break but two strikes from Alan Connell in the second half handed the 11/13 hosts the victory.

Paolo di Canio’s side, now generally available at 4/6 for the title, were able to move to the top after Southend and Cheltenham both dropped points.

The Blues went down 2-0 at resurgent Aldershot while the Gloucestershire outfit were held to a goalless draw by Wimbledon.

Crawley – who saw key striker Tyrone Barnett leave for Peterborough on Tuesday afternoon – dropped valuable points a day later as they were held at home by Morecambe.

Elsewhere in midweek, Crewe kept their play-off hopes alive with a battling defeat of Accrington, piling more misery on new Stanley boss Paul Cook.

The Alex struck late through Max Clayton and Luke Murphy to see off Cook’s men. The former Sligo Rovers manager has now seen his charges concede six times in his two games at the helm to lose ground in the race for the top seven.

The Railwaymen are now five points shy of the play-off zone and 25/1 with Bet365 to win promotion.

Oxford currently occupy seventh spot – they edged past Barnet 2-1 at the Kassam with loan striker Scott Rendell netting the opener.

Meanwhile at the bottom, Northampton claimed a vital victory against Macclesfield to move level on points with Plymouth and Hereford. Michael Jacobs, Luke Guttridge and Adebayo Akinfenwa all netted in the Cobblers’ 3-2 triumph. Coral now make them 11/5 to suffer relegation.

Macc are now 9/4 to drop out of the division – their Sixfields defeat was an eighth in succession and the Silkmen are now just three points clear of the bottom two.
